Why "Moving Stretching" Works Better Than Static Stretching?

Back pain has been part of my own journey for years and is one of the most common issues people experience today. Whether it comes from sitting too much, stress, or past injuries like sciatica, the discomfort can become part of daily life.

Many people are told to stretch on the floor to relieve tension. However, this is not always the most effective or safest approach, especially when the body is already sensitive or inflamed.

In this Qigong practice, we take a different approach. Instead of forcing the body into static stretches, we work with gentle, continuous movement to release tension and support the back naturally.

Why Static Stretching, Stretching on the mat, Is Not Always Helpful

When you stretch on the mat and hold a position, you are asking the body to lengthen while staying still. It is more difficult to relax, the floor is hard and this can sometimes create more tension rather than releasing it.

If you have experienced back pain or sciatica, you may have noticed that:

  • stretching can feel too intense

  • the body resists the movement

  • the relief does not last

  • The breathing is more difficult

This happens because the nervous system does not feel safe. When the body feels threatened, it tightens instead of letting go.

The Qigong Approach, Stretching in Movement

Qigong works differently. Instead of holding a stretch, we move slowly and continuously.

This creates, what can be called “moving stretching” it is easier to let go of the pain and breathe

we are not just stretching, we are also strengthening the muscles.

In this approach:

  • the body is never forced

  • the movement stays fluid

  • the breath supports the release

As you move, the muscles gently lengthen and release without resistance. This allows the nervous system to relax, which is essential for real change. And let's be honest, it is much nicer to do to!

Why This Is Effective for Back Pain

From experience, including living with back pain and sciatica, this type of movement is often more suitable.

Moving stretching helps to:

  • reduce stiffness without strain

  • improve circulation in the back helping the blood glow and the QI (the body's vital energy)

  • support the spine gently

  • calm the nervous system

Instead of pushing the body, you work with it.

Over time, this creates more sustainable relief and flexibility, Qigong works with the body and the mind too! This help the mind to become more flexible when addressing the pain

A Simple Qigong Principle

One of the key ideas in Qigong is that movement should feel natural and continuous.

There is no need to force or reach a limit.

The goal is to:

  • stay within a comfortable range

  • move slowly

  • allow the body to open gradually

This is very different from traditional stretching, where the focus is often on “going further”.

In this video, I guide you through a short Qigong routine designed to support the back.

The movements are simple, slow, and accessible. You do not need flexibility or prior experience.

You can follow along at your own pace and adapt the movements to your body.

Final Thoughts

Back pain requires a different kind of attention. More force is not the solution.

By working with movement instead of static stretching, you allow the body to release tension in a safer and more effective way.

Qigong offers a simple and sustainable approach that supports both the body and the nervous system.
